Search engine optimisation (SEO) can feel overwhelming because there is so much advice online, much of it contradictory. The best way to learn is in a logical order, practising each step on a real website. Here is a sequence that works.
Step 1: Understand how search engines work
Learn the basics of crawling (search engines discovering pages), indexing (storing and understanding them) and ranking (deciding which results best answer a query). Everything else in SEO builds on these three ideas.
Step 2: Learn keyword research and search intent
Find out what your audience actually searches for and why. A search can be informational (“how to learn SEO”), commercial (“best SEO course”), transactional (“register for SEO training”) or navigational (looking for a specific brand). Match each page to one main intent.
Step 3: Master on-page SEO
- Write unique, descriptive title tags and meta descriptions.
- Use one clear H1 and a logical heading structure.
- Create content that fully answers the searcher’s question.
- Add descriptive alt text to images and link related pages together.
Step 4: Learn technical SEO basics
Make sure pages can be crawled and indexed: XML sitemaps, robots.txt, canonical tags, redirects, mobile-friendliness and page speed. Google Search Console is your most important free tool here.
Step 5: Understand off-page SEO
Links and mentions from relevant, trustworthy websites help search engines judge authority. Focus on earning them through useful content, partnerships and genuine relationships, and avoid buying links or other manipulative tactics.
Step 6: Build content strategy and topical authority
Plan clusters of content around the topics your business should be known for, with a main guide supported by detailed articles that link to each other.
Step 7: Measure and audit
Use Search Console and Google Analytics 4 to track impressions, clicks and conversions. Learn to run an SEO audit and turn findings into a prioritised action plan.
A word on guarantees
No one can guarantee rankings. SEO is a long-term discipline that rewards useful content and a technically sound website. Be wary of anyone who promises “page one in a week”.
